Grumman J2F-4 Duck assigned to the USS Yorktown, 1943
Leroy Grumman and his partners began their aircraft manufacturing business on Long Island in Baldwin, New York, in 1930. From its humble beginnings, the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation was to become inexorably associated with the most notable names in aviation history. The list of famous aircraft produced by Grumman is outstanding and includes these famous monikers: Wildcat, Avenger, Hellcat, Bearcat, Panther, Cougar, Intruder and Tomcat, just to name a few. Although I’m taken and in awe of all these planes the Grumman J2F-4 Duck has always held a special place in my heart. What some may feel to be ungainly I find to be absolutely intriguing. Every aspect of its design appeals to me, from its massive fuselage atop its aeronautically designed boat hull, to the stabilizing pontoons under the lower wings, every detail to me is artistically irresistible.
