Quebec City, circa 1748

A view of the old city of Quebec, capital of New France, circa 1748

The painting, “Quebec City, circa 1748,” is a representation of a developing North American colonial city in the mid 18th century. From the densely populated “Old Town” on the lower flats, up the hill to the mid-city, which today is occupied by the famous Frontenac Hotel, the image continues on upward across the “Plains of Abraham” to the fortified citadel atop the city’s promontory ridge revealing the splendor of “Nouvelle-France.” Warships and merchant vessels of all sizes and shapes busily go about their daily routines on the city’s ever-changing waterfront. The painting takes us back to an era of uncertainty. A time when shifting boundaries and constant threat never diminished the grandeur of a magnificent landscape.
