Hudson River Nocturne
Oil on canvas, 16 x 23 inches, 2017
Collection of the Artist

From 1609 until the English take over in 1664, hundreds of Dutch vessels plied the rivers of New Netherland. Traveling thousands of miles back and forth along the Hudson, Connecticut, and Delaware Rivers watercraft of extraordinary variety carried the passengers and cargoes that were to form the basis of a new nation. Hudson River Nocturne depicts one such landing harboring a distinctly Dutch ferry. Vessels of this type were referred to as “veerschip” in the parlance of that time. This dramatic scene presents the ship awash in the golden light of an unseen oil fired lantern while the landing itself is illuminated by the cool light of a night sky.
