Kate's Light

New York's famous lighthouse two miles south of the Statue of Liberty

Near the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor is a lighthouse with a wonderful history. John Walker, the lighthouse keeper, his wife Kate, and their two small children lived at Robbins Reef Lighthouse in the late 1800's. Shortly after moving here John died and Kate stayed on as the lighthouse keeper, rowing her two children back and forth to school on Staten Island. She kept the lighthouse in perfect order for over 30 years and is credited with saving more than fifty lives, mostly fishermen. She retired in 1919, at the age of 73, and because of her long tenure there, many still refer to the Robbins Reef Lighthouse as “Kate’s Light.”
