Governor George Clinton arrives in Albany

In 1748, then Provincial Governor, George Clinton, Lord of Lincolnshire, journeyed up the Hudson River to Albany to meet with, and form an alliance with, the Iroquois Nation. This painting depicts the Governor’s arrrival aboard a flag bearing sloop owned by Abraham Douw. Note the Governor’s longboat in tow bearing gifts for the Indians.
